Wyeth actually visited an opium den in Philadelphia to do research for the story and later wrote, “It took days to wring the stuff out of my system. My mind and heart suffered the worst twist and distortion I ever experienced. But now thank God! I am free once more, and the trees and sky can move me to tears again and all those I love take their familiar places.” This print is sold unframed.
